BitDefender Internet Security 2009

BitDefender Internet Security 2009

At a Glance: BitDefender Internet Security 2009 is a strong player in the Internet security world. It fell in the upper end of the pack in my testing and has a great Dashboard user interface and solid performance.

The Triple "E" Keys

Effective

Firewall: Capable but dated. The firewall asks you much more often than others what to do for a certain program wanting to access the Internet. Sometimes it asks for its own programs. That's funny, actually, if annoying. I like the fact that the firewall uses "stealth" mode which hides the computers doors (ports) to the Internet.

Malware: The antivirus engine is rated well by testing labs for antivirus, and I agree. Virus test files were found and removed quickly. But it had more trouble with some spyware jobs. They didn't go quite as well as Norton but still good perfomance overall. This will need some work but BitDefender is a great company and will no doubt continue to improve this.

Score: Very Good

Easy

Install/Uninstall:BitDefender Internet Security 2009 installed quickly and easily.A restart is necessary. One annoying feature is the registration screen. Yes, it allows you to register later but this is a pet peeve of mine. Leave it optional and later, please, BitDefender. Uninstalling was very slow, needed a restart, and and left 9 folders and 2 files behind.

Setup/Use: After installing and restarting you are presented with a nine step setup wizard that's a snap. It updates and does a quick scan right away before launching the main screen--a good move though the updates are slow.

The user interface is a dashboard for the main components with both basic and advanced views. I found advanced view to be my preference and was very pleased with the ease of choosing default settings. There are much more advanced options for the technoids out there who will have no trouble spending lots of time milling around in the musty works.

Again, for most users it's all about setting it and forgetting it. I found BitDefender's Dashboard the best presentation of all the packages reviewed.

Help: Help is readily available starting with an older style Windows help file. It is detailed though including images, so very adequate. There's also a knowledge base, email and chat available. Phone support is free now also.

Score: Excellent

Efficient

Performance: After an initial scan, the scanner will only look at changed files. This speeds up subsequent scans quite a bit. Like all suites though, the time to do certain tasks will be increased. Scanning zipped files and email were pretty slow. Otherwise, it sped along and kept the system bog to a minimum.

Value: BitDefender Internet Security 2009 will run about $50 for three computers. Great value.

Score: Very Good

Overall Score: Very Good

Bottom Line: BitDefender is a favorite among users but it's user interface was the best part in my book. It's a capable suite but remember to be careful and have a complete security plan in place because none of them get it all.
